We know that it’s good to consolidate credit card debt (at least that is what we keep hearing from everyone). In fact, the first step towards addressing the problem of general debt is to consolidate credit card debt. Now, what do you do to make this happen ? Should you just go with that attractive ad in the newspaper that says ‘…the lowest APR in the town is available here’?

The first thing, really, is to keep your eyes and ears open. There are always a number of offers available for you to choose from. The credit card suppliers keep coming with new and more attractive offers asking you to choose them. However, you must note that the APR quoted in bold, e.g. 0% APR, is applicable only for a short term (3-9 months). The long term (or the standard) APR is different. So, when you go looking for a credit card to consolidate credit card debt, you must be keenly looking for these 3 things (in terms of APR) – introductory APR, introductory APR period and the standard APR. Let’s see how each one is important.

Introductory APR is probably the most attractive thing to look for when you are looking to deal with your money problems. If you use a card that has a low introductory APR e.g. 0%, the first thing you get relief in terms of the rate at which your outstanding money have been growing. Based on how long that 0% APR period is (generally you will look to consolidate credit card debt with a credit card supplier who offers 0% initial APR), you will at least be able to temporarily break the growth rate.

The longer the introductory period, the better it is. However, you should not ignore the standard APR. This is the interest rate that will be applied to your balance after the expiry of the introductory low APR period that was given to lure you to the supplier. If the standard APR is too high and you know that you will not be able to clear the balance during the low APR period, that one is probably not the best for you. However, if you think that you will be able to clear off the entire outstanding amount during that period, you can make some compromises on the standard APR that you eventually use.

The card that synchronizes with your current and future financial position (and needs), is the one you should make use of to help with your financial situation.

Although credit cards can help you enjoy a better quality of life, they can as easily get you into trouble if you consistently spend more than you earn. Eventually, you may reach a point when you are overwhelmed by debt and make an active effort to consult with a certified expert in debt management.

When trying to decide the best strategy for debt management, debtors are often offered two choices when faced with overwhelming debt: they can either get a credit card debt consolidation loan or declare bankruptcy. Both methods clear debt completely, offering a fresh start, but which is the best solution?

By looking at each solution in turn and then comparing them against each other, it’s possible to determine the best choice.

Debt Consolidation

Fortunately, there is an alternative, another legal way of getting clear of your creditors and your mounting bills. You can get a secured or unsecured loan that is of lower interest than your credit cards. This loan can be used to pay charge cards, leaving you only with the loan to pay off. Besides paying off your debts in full, your credit scores will have to reflect that you have “paid as agreed.”

All you have to do is provide reasonable proof that you have a steady income and can pay back the loan in a timely manner.

Bankruptcy

This should be considered the choice of last resort. The effects of a personal bankruptcy are long lasting. Although after declaring bankruptcy a court rules that you’re no longer held to your financial obligations, your credit report will show this for ten years. During that time, you can’t apply for a car, a home, and even life insurance. Sometimes, too, it prevents you from getting a job.

The Best Debt Solution

Although both forms of debt management provide the same outcome: a legal release from indebtedness, they do this in completely different ways. With bankruptcy, a court order frees you from further obligation to your creditors. With debt consolidation, a blanket loan frees you from further obligation to your creditors. Bankruptcy ruins your credit report and a debt consolidation loan saves it from ruin. A debt consolidation loan is better provided you can provide proof of regular work. Otherwise, if you have no income coming in and no way of obtaining employment in the near future, then a personal bankruptcy may have to be filed.

Saurabh K Jain asked:

Credit card debt relief grant is another help, which is available to you. Generally credit card debt consolidation at times builds up an amount that is so high that it becomes difficult to handle it, leave apart paying it back. This may happen due to various reasons. It may be due to a long time of unplanned investment decision, it can be due to neglect card bills or it can be due to a large number of high interest cards. Whatever be the reason it all leads to the same result of high credit card debt. Now at times the debt consolidators also help out through their own devised plans of debt relief grant. Credit card relief grant may promote grants to the customer, which may not be a full-fledged discount but could help out in getting out of the tricky situation.

Helpful Relief

Under such situation, non-profit debt relief is very helpful, as these plans check out the situation and help in devising a proper plan for them. However, only very few genuine companies are available in the market but still, their whereabouts can be found out and they can be approached for appointments as debt consolidators. However, at times these companies, which claim that they will be giving non-profit relief, turn out to be a big menace. The kind of charges that they levy upon the customer may be exorbitantly high and this may leave you wondering about the feasibility of the transaction.

Problems With The Debt Consolidators

Also, at times these companies keep on collecting money but pay back the creditors late which makes the situation all the more worst. Firstly there is a problem of huge pilled up bills and then this problem of so called debt consolidation arises out which makes it further knotty as late fees charges are an addition to the cost.

So just keep a check on the company that you are appointing as your consolidators. Are they providing you with debt relief grant through their non-profit debt relief or are they making the situation all the worse?

For information on such companies, you can check with Better Business Bureau and other similar institutions whether any complaint has been lodged against them earlier or not. In case of any complaints, you know what to do.

Deon

DebtCareTaker.com : Nowadays many people face debt problems and delinquency issues. Consolidation of your debt would be the best alternative for you. However, before making any important decisions related to your credit, you should have some precise information regarding debt settlement. Credit card debt is the same like any other unsecured customer debt, with the exception that it occurs by accessing and using your credit cards. Debt takes place when a customer uses his credit card for purchasing any item or paying for some service using credit cards. These debts accumulate over time, and increase in amount when the interest and penalties “pile up” whenever the customer becomes delinquent.

Barry

Hector Milla asked:

A credit card debt consolidation loan is a special loan that a debtor can use to break free from the constriction of too many unpaid charge card bills. Over time, these bills are slowly getting worse, due to the high interest rates and late fee penalties accruing on them. With a consolidated loan, they can all be paid off in one swoop.

Consolidated loans are low interest loans, and they can be either secure of unsecured. Their purpose is to pay off all outstanding balances on one or more charge cards. Once these balances are reduced to zero, then the debtor can focus on paying off the consolidated loan.

The main advantages of these loans are that a debtor is required to meet only a minimum of qualifications to be eligible; they replace high interest loans with a low interest loan; they replace multiple payments into one single payment; and they improve credit ratings, by removing negative items and having them marked as paid in full.

Ways To Reduce Debt Prior To Consolidation

It’s a wise move to reduce revolving credit card debt prior to consolidation.

Here are five tips on how to get on top of financial chaos.

1. Pay by cash or check as much as possible. This will minimize the use of your credit cards. It will also allow you to only spend the money you currently have instead of spending money that you have yet to earn. Moreover, this method allows you to keep better track of your spending and assess where the money is going. Charge cards make it far to easy to spend money on frivolous things that add only a minimal value to your life.

2. A budget will enable you to know how much is coming in, how much is going out, and the difference between necessities and luxuries. A budget is an instrument for fiscal responsibility because it empowers you to prioritize your payments.

3. Try as best you can to pay off on the amount you borrow from your charge card account. While you may not have the money to pay off old bills, at least try to settle new bills as quickly as possible.

4. Get counseling from a financial expert who can help you identify how to earn more in your profession, how to save more on your expenses, how to plan for your taxes, and how to balance your monthly account. A counselor may also be able to direct you to resources that will enable you to handle your income and expenditure better.

Matteo

Hector Milla asked:

A credit card debt consolidation loan is offered to consumers for the purpose of paying off numerous credit accounts. Unlike a traditional loan, which can be used for anything, this loan must be used for the designated purpose. A consolidation loan is obtained in order to take advantage of lower or fixed interest rates, lower monthly payments, or to avoid negative credit remarks.

Debt consolidation essentially transforms numerous unsecured loans into one large unsecured loan. In some cases it will be in the form of a secured loan with small monthly payments. In some cases, a consolidation representative can reduce the amount of the loan through debt negotiations. In other instances, the company may agree to buy outstanding debt at a discount, and then offer the discounted rate to the consumer. These debts, in turn, will be reflected as paid in the consumer’s credit report.

Debt consolidation is a noteworthy get-out-of-debt option when the consumer is facing credit card debt. Credit cards carry high interest rates, much higher than a traditional unsecured loan through a bank. Those who own a car or a home can often get even lower interest rates when they use their property as secured loan collateral. The total amount of all subsequent payments to the consolidation company and all related interest is drastically reduced, thereby allowing the individual to pay down their debt quickly.

Because consolidating one’s debt provides distinct advantages, many credit card companies and financing agencies are now offering a refinance option. By refinancing, the consumer is locked into even higher interest rates with a longer period of repayment. On the other hand, a debt consolidation loan lowers the interest rate, and at times, reduces the total balance.

Sadly, some credit card companies will wait until the consumer has financially cornered themselves before offering the refinance option. By this time, the individual feels that there is no other alternative but to agree to additional repayment terms. On the other hand, a savvy consumer who takes advantage of a consolidation offer can eliminate any chance of a ruined credit report, garnishments, or legal action.

Multiple options are available to get out of debt, with debt consolidation being only one of these options. Yet, it is the only option that allows the consumer to keep their good name and good credit score. Other options, such as bankruptcy, can tarnish the person’s record for many years to come, preventing them from obtaining the financing they need or the job of their dreams.

Philip
