Working with the Google Calendar app

Always have your diary at hand with the Google Calendar app.

What is Google Calendar?

Anyone with a Google account can use the calendar on the computer and on a mobile device. The app is usually not standard on the mobile device. Then you must first download it for the iPhone / iPad or Android device. Then tap the Calendar app to open the app.

Adjust calendar view

By default, the app opens with, for example, an annual plan or a daily plan. But perhaps another view, such as a monthly view, is better.

  • Tap the menu. That is the icon with the three dashes.
  • Tap Day , 3 days , Week or Month .

The display changes immediately.

Schedule a new appointment

Google Calendar is easy to use. Put an appointment in the agenda like this:

  • Tap the “+” sign icon.
  • Tap Appointment.
  • At ‘Enter a title’, type your appointment.
  • Tap the date.
  • A calendar opens. If necessary, swipe left or right to select another month.
  • Tap the desired day within the month.
  • Tap OK.
  • Tap the start time to set it.
  • A clock appears. Tap the hour and then the minutes.
  • Tap OK.
  • Set the end time in the same way.
  • Tap Save if you do not want to enter anything else. Do you want to enter other details such as the location? Then skip this step and only tap Save when you are done.

Repeat an appointment

Does the appointment occur more often, for example every week? State it and the app will always return the appointment.

  • Under the date, tap More options.
  • Tap Not repeated.
  • Choose how often the appointment must come back.

Add location

Note where the appointment takes place. Then you don’t have to look it up again later.

  • Tap Add location.
  • Type the location.
  • Once you type, suggestions will appear from Google Maps. Tap the desired address.

Add a notification

Sometimes it is useful to get a reminder for an appointment. By default, this notification is set to thirty minutes, but you can also receive the reminder earlier or later.

  • Tap the crosses behind a bell icon to delete set notifications.
  • Tap (Add another) notification.
  • Choose from the various options that appear.

Mark the appointment

For the recognition you can give appointments their own color. Give all family appointments a green color for example.

  • Tap Default color.
  • Select the desired color.

Take note

Optionally, add a note as a memory aid. For example, state what the agreement is about or with which people you have all agreed.

  • Tap Add Note.
  • Type a text.

Edit appointment

Forget something to fill in, such as the location? You can always edit the appointment.

  • If necessary, first tap the correct day.
  • Tap the appointment.
  • Tap the pencil icon.
  • Adjust the appointment.
  • Tap Save.

Delete appointment

The appointment is unexpectedly canceled? Then remove it from the agenda.

  • If necessary, first tap the correct day.
  • Tap the appointment.
  • Tap the three dots at the top right.

Tap Delete > Delete.

WhatsApp: 10 useful tips and tricks

Tips and articles about WhatsApp are eagerly visited. Not surprising, because this app is a nice alternative to paid SMS. WhatsApp ensures easy and accessible contact with your contacts. Here a selection of the most popular features in WhatsApp!

# 1: Search messages

You remember that you exchanged messages with someone about something, but what exactly did something look like? With the search function in WhatsApp you can have the conversation back on the surface.

# 2: Make a message unread

Ok, you have opened and read a message, but no time or inspiration to respond. Mark the message as ‘unread’ to remember that you still want to reply.

# 3: Forward a message

Forward a message from yourself or from someone else to someone else. That saves typing again. But it is also possible with nice photos. If you forward a message or photo from someone else, first ask yourself whether the other person appreciates forwarding.

# 4: Send a recording

You may also have read the article “Far away, but still close” in our computer magazine Enter in which someone read her granddaughter through WhatsApp. She used the option to send a sound recording. Personal and practical, especially when you have a lot to say.

# 5: Making moving pictures

Get creative and rejoice someone with a moving image (GIF). Turn an existing video or something you record on the spot into a picture in which a six-second image is played repeatedly. You do not need a complicated app, you can do it in WhatsApp.

# 6: Send a photo quickly

Quickly share a photo without leaving the WhatsApp app. It is a piece of cake.

# 7: Turn off notifications for group conversations

Sometimes the messages just keep coming in. Certainly when you participate in a WhatsApp group, this can lead to irritation. Enough of the message flow? Turn off the notifications from the group and view later what has been exchanged.

# 8: Use a mailing list

Quickly send the same message to several people at the same time via a mailing list. A practical way to tell, for example, that you have a new phone number. Less personal, but it is also useful for congratulations on a public holiday.

# 9: Calling with WhatsApp

Make a phone call via WhatsApp if the smartphone is connected to the internet via WiFi. Then you do not pay for the call via your calling bundle.

# 10: Using WhatsApp on the computer

We end this article with the tip to use WhatsApp on the computer. Handy when you enjoy working at the computer, but also occasionally sit on WhatsApp. Then you don’t always have to read and type messages on a small screen.

Use WhatsApp Desktop

WhatsApp also has a special program for using the popular chat service via the computer. It is available for both Windows and Mac.

WhatsApp is a popular app for smartphones. The app makes it possible to send text messages and photos via an internet connection. You can compare it with SMS. Only you do not pay per message, but communication runs through the internet. For a long time people could only use WhatsApp via a smartphone. Since 2015, the service can also be used via the computer. First only via a website. Read more about this in the article ‘Use WhatsApp on the computer ‘. However, it is now also possible to put the chat service app on the computer. This gives access to chat messages even faster.

Smartphone on hand

Both when using the website and the app on the computer, a smartphone with the WhatsApp app remains necessary. You even have to keep this handy. However, WhatsApp can be useful on the computer, because typing and reading is easier. On the desktop version you can see all chats and messages that are also on the phone.

Download on Windows

Download the WhatsApp Desktop program from the WhatsApp website.

  • Open the browser and surf to whatsapp.com
  • Click on Download.
  • Click Download for Windows (64-bit) or 32-bit version. This depends on which version of Windows you have.
  • Click Run .
  • The program starts automatically. Is that not the case? Then click on the Start button> WhatsApp.

Download on Mac

Download the WhatsApp Desktop program from the App Store (Mac).

  • Open the App Store program. You can find the program on the Dock below, or via Finder > Programs > App Store.
  • In the search window, click Search , type “WhatsApp” and press the Enter key.
  • Click on ‘ Download ‘ under ‘WhatsApp Desktop’.
  • Click Install app.
  • If required, log in with your Apple ID.
  • The program will be installed. As soon as the ‘Open’ button is displayed, the program can be found on the computer. To do this, click on Finder > Programs > WhatsApp.

To use the opened WhatsApp Desktop, log in using your telephone.

  • A window with a QR code appears on the screen .
  • Pick up the phone and open the WhatsApp app.
  • For phones with Android, tap the three dots> WhatsApp Web > OK, understood .
  • For phones with iOS, tap Settings > WhatsApp Web / Desktop > Scan QR code at the bottom .
  • Hold the phone’s camera in front of the code on the computer screen.

A connection is established and you can access your WhatsApp messages on the computer. As soon as the computer or telephone loses a connection to the internet, you must reconnect via the QR code.

View chats

Once you are logged in, get started with the desktop version of WhatsApp. On the left side of the window is an overview of all chats. By clicking on one of these chats, all related messages appear on the right.

To send a message

Sending messages via WhatsApp Desktop works almost the same as via the mobile app.

  • At the top, click the plus sign (Windows) or the square icon with pencil (Mac).
  • A list of contacts opens. Tap the contact that you want to send a message.
  • The chat screen opens.
  • Type a message and press the Enter key to send the message.

Send photo or video

Send a photo or video easily while chatting. In the steps below we already assume that a chat window is open.

  • Click on the paper clip icon.
  • Click on the purple circle (‘Photos and videos’) to share existing images.
  • Navigate to the correct photo or video through the open window and click Open(Windows) or Open (Mac).
  • Optionally type a caption and then click on the green circle .

The image material is sent.

Save photo or video to computer

The photos and videos that you receive via Whatsapp can be saved directly to the computer.

  • If you want to save an image, right click on the image in the chat window.
  • Click Save Image As.
  • Choose the location where you want to save the image and click Save.
  • If you want to save a video, left click on the video. This opens and plays.
  • Click in the top right on the icon of an arrow pointing downwards in the direction of a thin line.
  • At the bottom of the screen you can now determine the location where you want to save the video.
  • Click Save.

Send voice message

You can send a voice message via the microphone icon (bottom right of the screen).

  • Click on the microphone icon.
  • Leave a message.
  • Click on the green circle if you are satisfied with the message. Do you not want to send this message? Then click on the red cross.

Sign Out

We assume that you only install WhatsApp Desktop on a computer that you do not share with others. Someone who opens the program can also view your chats. If you want to prevent this, always unsubscribe after use.

  • Click in the left part of the window on the three dots (Windows) or on the down arrow icon (Mac).
  • Click Log out.

Next time you must log in again using the QR code.

Use the calendar on the iPhone

Use the Calendar app on the iPhone and put your appointments together in a well-organized way. So you always have them at hand.

Calendar App for the iPad

In this article we discuss the Calendar app for the iPhone. The app has the same functions on the iPad, but looks slightly different on the larger screen.

Different calendars

People can manage multiple calendars in the Calendar app. Consider a calendar that is linked to an iCloud, Gmail or Outlook.com account or a calendar that is only on the device itself.

Calendar linked to an existing account

With an iPhone you also have an Apple ID. This allows you to use various Apple services. Consider bringing in apps from the App Store. You can also use the iCloud calendar with this account. You can also view this calendar on other devices that you log in with your Apple ID.

You can also have an e-mail address with a corresponding calendar function. For example, Google calendar with a Gmail address. If you have the Gmail address linked to the iPhone, you can enable the calendar so that it is also visible on the iPhone. If you do not yet have an e-mail address but you want to do so, read the article ‘ Setting up e-mail on your tablet and smartphone ‘.

Make sure that the calendar of an existing account can be used in the app:

  • Tap Settings.
  • Scroll down and tap Passwords and accounts.
  • Under ‘Accounts’ you will find the accounts that are linked to the device. For example Gmail or iCloud. Tap the account whose calendar you want to manage.
  • If the ‘Calendars’ option is on the screen, the account has a calendar function.
  • If the slider behind it is green, the calendar is switched on. If not, tap the slider.

Calendar on the device itself

Do you not have any accounts linked to the iPhone or have you disabled the calendar function (the slider behind ‘Calendars’ in the steps described above is then gray)? Then use the calendar on the device itself. This is enabled by default.

Year, month or day view

We dive into the calendar.

  • Tap the Calendar app.
  • You see a year view, a month view or a day view. Switch between these views by tapping Today at the bottom left and tapping the month or year at the top left.
  • The current day is circled in red.
  • View from which accounts the calendar has been added. Tap Calendars at the bottom.
  • Tap Done to close this window.

Add a new appointment

Add a new activity as follows:

  • Tap the day the event occurs.
  • Tap the plus sign at the top right.
  • Determine from top to bottom all the features of the new activity. Type the name of the activity.
  • Tap the ‘Location’ field and type the location of the appointment. This can simply be ‘At home with Marie’, but also a specific address.
  • If necessary, select the correct location from the suggestions or tap Done on the keyboard.
  • Indicate whether it concerns the entire day (tap the slider behind ‘All day’) or tap Start to select the start time.
  • Move the time by swiping a bit over the hours and minutes.
  • If necessary, change the day at the same place.
  • Tap End to set the end time.
  • Does the activity return weekly or monthly? Tap Repeat and tap the desired frequency.
  • Should travel time be taken into account? Tap Travel time and then the slider behind ‘Travel time’ to indicate the travel time.
  • Have you just set the travel time, tap the top left of Previous to go back a step.
  • Tap Notification to receive a reminder about the appointment.
  • Tap the desired moment to receive the reminder. For example, choose 1 hour before travel time .
  • It is possible to set another notification at a different time. Simply touch and two email notification .
  • Add a web address or note if necessary. To do this, tap URL or Notes .
  • The basis of the event is now entered. Tap Add .

The activity is in your calendar.

Tip: you can put birthdays in the calendar very well by using the ‘All day’ option in combination with an annual repeat.

What calendar does the appointment contain?

When multiple accounts and calendars are linked to the device, you have additional options when creating an appointment. For example, indicate to which account the activity belongs.

  • When creating the appointment, tap Calendar.
  • At iCloud you can select ‘Work’, ‘Private’ or ‘Family’. The appointment will then be given a different color in the calendar. But if you use a calendar that belongs to Gmail, for example, you can also tap that calendar. Make your choice.

Invite someone for an appointment

Contacts are often also added to an account. Invite these contacts for an appointment:

  • When creating the appointment, tap Attendees .
  • Type the name of the contact.
  • Suggestions appear as you type. Tap the correct contact.
  • Tap Done .
  • Touch Previous to return to the appointment.

  • Go in the calendar to the day on which the activity is listed.
  • Tap the appointment.
  • Tap Delete appointment (and again to confirm) or Change .
  • Adjust the desired options for the activity.
  • Tap Done.

Privacy shortcuts in the Facebook app

The Facebook app bundles privacy settings so that it is easier and clearer to find the right settings.

Facebook has an app for the smartphone or tablet. The institutions that deal with privacy are bundled in this. In this article we review the settings so that you are sure that your privacy is guaranteed.

  • Open the Facebook App.
  • Tap the three horizontal bars in the menu.
  • Scroll down and tap the Settings and privacy option.
  • Tap Privacy shortcuts.

The page that follows consists of these sections: “Privacy,” “Account security,” “Advertising preferences,” “Your Facebook data,” “Security,” and “Legal and policy.” We will discuss “Privacy” and “Advertising Preferences” because those two contain the setting options that are related to what you reveal about yourself.

Privacy

This section bundles the Facebook settings that deal with your privacy in the broad sense of the word. Set here who can see what personal information about you, who can see your messages, but also whether Facebook can keep track of your location. It is a very extensive part so take your time.

We cover the following options:

  • Check a few important privacy settings;
  • Manage your location settings;
  • Manage face recognition;
  • View more privacy settings.

Check a few important privacy settings

  • Tap Check a few important privacy settings.
  • Tap Next.
  • On Facebook you can indicate per message who can see it. But users can also choose a default setting, so that it does not have to be set separately for each message. Indicate here which setting you want as standard: ‘Everyone’ (that is really everyone, with and without a Facebook account), ‘Friends’ (that is, of course, Facebook friends) or another category. The setting that is most obvious is ‘Friends’, which you set next to ‘Choose target group’.
  • Then tap Done if you have adjusted something.
  • Tap Next.
  • Who can see the personal data you have entered, such as e-mail address and date of birth and telephone number? Here too there is a choice of ‘Everyone’, ‘Friends’ or another category. It is also possible to choose ‘Only me’. You will of course only see the data that you have entered yourself at this location.
  • When everything is set, tap Next.
  • Perhaps there are apps linked to your Facebook profile. In that case you set per app who can see any messages. Again the choices are ‘Everyone’, ‘Friends’, ‘Only me’ or another category. If no apps are linked at all, this list is empty. Remove an app from the list? Tap the white bullet behind the app and then tap Delete > Delete > Done.
  • When everything is set, tap Next.
  • Tap Close.

Manage your location settings

Can Facebook know where you are? This is what the location settings are about.

  • Tap Manage your location settings.
  • If you have not given Facebook permission, the text ‘Never’ will appear at the top of the screen behind ‘Location’. You don’t have to do anything because Facebook does not keep track of where you are.
  • Is the text ‘Always’ or ‘When using app’ behind ‘Location’? Then tap Location > Location > Never.

Manage face recognition

Facebook can recognize you on photos that place yourself or others on your timeline. If you do not like that switch off this option.

  • Tap Manage Face Recognition .
  • Tap Do you want Facebook to recognize you in photos and videos?
  • Tap the desired option Yes or No .

View more privacy settings

  • Tap View more privacy settings .
  • Under “Your activities” under “Who can see your future messages?” state who can see all your messages. You have set this for this.
  • If necessary, tap Set restrictions for who can see your older messages . Do this if you have doubts about whether previous messages had the setting you want. Then tap Restrict Previous Messages > Restrict Previous Messages . All posts you’ve ever posted can now only be seen by your Facebook friends.
  • Tap Who can see the people, pages and lists that you follow?
  • Select the desired setting.
  • Then tap top left on the back arrow.
  • Five options have been bundled under ‘How people can find you and contact you’. Set them by clicking on them and setting the desired option:
  • “Who can send you friend requests?”
Leave this on ‘Everyone’. With each request that you receive, you decide whether or not to accept it.
“Who can see your friends list?”
Set who is visible to who you are Facebook friends with. Some people don’t want this to be visible to others. In that case, choose Only me.
  • “Who can you search using the email address you provided?”
Suppose someone searches on Facebook by typing in your email address. Who do you want to be found by? Set the desired option.
  • “Who can you find using the telephone number you provided?”
The same applies to telephone number as to e-mail address.
  • “Do you want search engines to redirect you to your profile outside of Facebook?”
This option means whether you want to be found (with your Facebook profile) on, for example, Google. Don’t you want this? Then drag the slider behind “Allow search engines to redirect to Facebook from your profile” and tap Disable.

Ad Preferences

Facebook places advertisements, which is the revenue model of the social medium. That is why there is no escape from advertising. The only thing you can do is let Facebook know if your data can be used to offer customized advertisements. If you don’t want that, turn it off in the following way:

  • Under “Ad Preferences,” tap View your ad settings.
  • Tap Ads based on partner data.
  • Tap Continue.
  • Turn off the blue slider in the middle of the page.
  • Tap Save.
  • Tap Done.
  • Now tap Ads based on your activity on products from Facebook companies that you see outside of Facebook products.
  • Tap at the bottom of the page No.
  • Tap the left arrow on the top left.
  • Now swipe down and tap Ads that contain your social promotions.
  • At the bottom of the page, tap Nobody.
  • Tap the left arrow on the top left.

Tap the left arrow again at the top left to exit the Privacy shortcuts.

Only allow ‘trusted’ applications in Windows

Software-Restriction Policy 2.1.0: Malware is always lurking around the corner and especially ransomware has made countless demage. Simple Software – Restriction Policy is a somewhat unusual way to cut off such bad applications: this software ensures that only executables can be executed that are located in the \ Program Files, \ Program Files (x86) and \ Windows folders.

Those who use Windows Pro or higher can use a built-in Windows security function to ‘whitelist’ certain applications – to place them on a list of approved applications. This function is named Software Restriction Policy (srp) and can be configured from the Local Security Policy module, among other things. Windows Home users can unfortunately be ignored here, but Simple Software Restriction Policy offers similar functionality. Moreover, the tool is very easy to use and that is also handy for users of Windows Pro.

After installation the program in the Windows system tray and the protection is active. From now on, only programs that are in the \ Program Files, \ Program Files (x86) and \ Windows folders, or in their subfolders, can be executed. It is therefore important that you are certain that the executables at those locations: so first runs a thorough antivirus scan.

Safety first

It is also important that you sign up for a day-to-day use with a standard account as you do not have write permissions on the specified directories from such an account. Malware, such as ransomware, that knows how to get into your system under the auspices of that account will therefore not be able to install themselves in the folders listed. Possibly in other locations, such as your user profile, but thanks to Simple Software Restriction Policy, they cannot be executed from there.

By the way, it is possible at any time to temporarily disable the protection of the tool at the push of a button: the protection is then set to inactive for 30 minutes by default. That is more than enough to install a new program (in one of the mentioned folders) or to remove a surplus program. However, you can also adjust this length: this is done by editing the corresponding software policy.ini file with your Notepad. This file also contains a series of options and setting options with which you can tailor the tool even better to your choice. Here you can also indicate, for example, that programs are allowed on the desktop or the security should not apply to a local administrator.
