Tracing Credit Card Info As You Travel

October 23rd, 2009

Credit cards are a safe and convenient way to track expenditures when traveling, although they can be stolen rather easily in the right circumstances.

When someone is looking for a good place to grab onto another’s credit card, they often choose a very heavily populated vacation spot; so protect yourself before leaving to go on vacation this year.

The first thing to do is to clean out your wallet and if you usually have several credit cards and charge cards you always carry, change your normal habit.

Go through all of the cards to find out which ones have the largest credit line, the most credit still available and the lowest interest rate on purchases. Choose only two cards to carry and if one card is lost you’ll have a back-up card; and then on arrival at your destination, put your back up card in the hotel safe or the in-room safe.

Before leaving home, put the other cards in your house safe or if you do not have one, consider renting a lock box at the bank to put things in during your absence. You may as well leave your credit cards out in plain sight, like the top of an entryway table if you only put them in a kitchen cabinet or desk drawer, when you go away; burglars notice when a house is empty and kitchen cabinets or desk drawers will be the first place they look after gaining entry into the place.

Write down the contact information for your credit card issuers and put it in a safe place in your luggage. Vacationing can get a bit stressful, if a purse or wallet or suitcase is misplaced and it will help ease the tension if there are additional copies on the information available somewhere else.

Unless you immediately report that the card is missing, you might have to show proof that you didn’t enjoy that meal at a 4-Star Restaurant or purchase that ,000 necklace.

It could be smart to inform your credit card issuers that you will be going on a vacation, how long you plan to be gone and where you are planning to stay, because some card issuers send up red flags on your account when they notice excessive activity on your credit card. When the credit card issuers are not informed about your vacation plans, they might place a freeze on any charges that haven’t been previously authorized.

When you use your credit card for vacation purchases there is an added benefit, because several card issuers offer loss and theft protection; if you purchase an item on vacation and it is stolen, you can get a credit to your account by notifying your card issuer.

The complaints about any merchandise you have ordered and never received are most easily handled, if the purchase was made with a card.

If you are traveling, you can get in on some fun adventures that could tire you out, stress you out and tap you out, however, if you keep good track of your expenses with credit cards you will have a better idea when to stop the adventure seeking.
